Best running shoes for the cold weather.
There are a lot of challenges for runners during the winter.
Between the cold temperatures, variable weather, and short days, just mustering up the will to step foot outdoors can cause even the most motivated runner to retreat to the treadmill.
The refreshing, lively feeling one gets when forgoing climate control in favor of braving the elements is also present.
The idea that I am a real runner is solidified by the sense of pride and knowing nod from each runner you pass.
Mental fortitude won’t keep you warm and dry, but it will get you out the door.
That can only be accomplished with the right winter running gear. jackets, hats, gloves, tights, and shoes are some of the things we’re talking about.
It is time to get into these cold weather kicks for extended outdoor training.
Inov-8 Roclite G 315 GTX
These trail runners honestly blew me away in testing, even though Inov-8 is known for its durability and taking on tough demands of training.
My feet stayed dry and warm thanks to the Gore-Tex membrane, but the G-GRIP outsole was more than capable of taking on any obstacles, including slippery sidewalks and washed-out corners.
The surprising energy return in the POWERFLOW midsole is one of the perks of the Inov-8 Roclite G 315 GTX.
With plenty of spring in each step, I was able to maintain a fast pace despite the large frame.
The forefoot is a little narrow, which isn’t uncommon for Inov-8 silhouettes, but it has become my go-to when my runs call for battling the elements.
Adidas Terrex Agravic Tech Pro
The Adidas Terrex Agravic Tech Pro is ready for the winter, if you want full coverage on snowy days.
This high-top runner provides excellent traction thanks to the Continental Rubber outsole that is similar to the grip you would experience with a brand- new set of all-terrain tires.
Despite the ankle- covering silhouette of these kicks, I found them to be very responsive, thanks in part to the Boost-cushioned midsole that gives a good mix of cushioning and responsiveness.
The lacing makes it easy to find a snug fit, but don’t expect to kick these puppies off easily, especially after completing a route in frigid temps.
I found the bootie was a bit rigid and could be a problem if you tried to open the enclosure with frost on your digits.
Merrell Moab Flight
When the temperature drops below 50 degrees, the Moab Flights from Merrell are just as comfortable as if they were a trail runner.
On days that didn’t feature overcast, I liked the mesh upper, even though it isn’t waterproof.
Every step was confident, no matter the terrain, thanks to the EcoStep Recycle outsole from Vibram.
The collar is plush, cozy and prime for walking paces, but I did feel a slip or two when quickening my strides, as the shoe is almost too comfy.
For a better feel in every step, I recommend using a heel lock lace system, finally use that extra eyelet.
